Southern blight ( ) of soybean ( ) is an important disease throughout the world. Some soil amendments can reduce disease levels by improving soil microbial activity. The main goals of this study were to investigate the effects of soil amendments such as dried powders of kudzu ( ), velvetbean ( ), and pine bark ( ), on soil microbial population and disease caused by on soybean. Pine bark, velvetbean (mucuna) and kudzu (25 g kg-1 amended (A) ~ 2 to 11%)]. was the bacteria most frequently isolated in soils with velvetbean or kudzu (NA ~ log 5.7 CFU g-1 stimulated increase in population of population was higher in A than in NA (NA ~ bark stimulated increases in populations of soil population increased with addition of kudzu (NA ~ log bark can increase antagonistic population in soil and reduce disease. Additional keywords: , stem rot, soil amendments, , .

Effect of Organic Amendments on Sclerotial Germination, Mycelial Growth, and Sclerotium rolfsii-Induced Diseases

The addition of organic residues to soil is an option to control some soil-borne diseases. Benzaldehyde and powders of kudzu (Pueraria lobata), velvetbean (Mucuna deeringiana), and pine-bark (Pinus elliottii and P. taeda) added to soil could reduce certain soilborne diseases. This study evaluated the effects of benzaldehyde and the dried powders of kudzu, velvetbean, and pine-bark as soil amend...

Concentration of Heavy Metals in Bark Samples of Pine Trees in Neishabur, Iran

Background and purpose: Heavy metals in urban air are major health threats and increase the risk of respiratory, cardiovascular, and cancers in humans. An efficient and low-cost method for monitoring these pollutants is using tree bark as a bioindicator. The purpose of this study was to measure the concentration of heavy metals by pine tree bark as a bioindicator in Neishabur, north-east of Ira...

Biochar Amendment Modifies Expression of Soybean and Rhizoctonia solani Genes Leading to Increased Severity of Rhizoctonia Foliar Blight

Application of biochar, a pyrolyzed biomass from organic sources, to agricultural soils is considered a promising strategy to sustain soil fertility leading to increased plant productivity. It is also known that applications of biochar to soilless potting substrates and to soil increases resistance of plants against diseases, but also bear the potential to have inconsistent and contradictory re...

Similar to plants, soil salinity may reduce microbial growth and activities in different ways. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of different levels of salinity on some microbial indices in the presence and absence of plant's living roots. In this study, five levels of salinity using NaCl, CaCl2, MgCl2 and KCl and three soil media (soil with no plant, soil cultivated with wheat...

Orchard Management in Sustainable Fruit Production

The purpose of our experiments was to examine the effect of different soil covering matters (livestock manure, straw and crushed pine bark) on the quantity of some microbial groups (total bacteria, aerobic cellulolytic bacteria, microscopic fungi) occuring in soil. During two years samples were taken from a Cider apple plantation at the Fruit Production Research and Advisory Kht, Újfehértó four...
